Here in India today, there’s a national strike. The government have changed the law to open up farming to the free markets. Farmers are concerned that the changes will lead to a loss of income, control and eventually, their livelihood.
The response of millions of farmers has been to march on Delhi, where they have been detained at the border for 12 days.
This is the kind of collective action required to fight against an unfair decision in a democratic country. The farmers fear the motives of big business. The government must make concessions to this law to appease the unions.
Whatever the outcome it’s an impressive show of solidarity amongst the farming community.
A good old fashioned protest still gets the message to those in power.
