Snafu

I’m fascinated by language. Etymology is a natural curiosity. I found a new word today: snafu.

snafu
/snaˈfuː,ˈsnafuː/

INFORMAL • NORTH AMERICAN

noun

a confused or chaotic state; a mess.
“an enormous amount of my time was devoted to untangling snafus”

adjective

in utter confusion or chaos.
“our refrigeration plant is snafu”

verb

throw (a situation) into chaos.
“you ignored his orders and snafued everything”

snafu
/snaˈfuː,ˈsnafuː/

Origin 1940s: acronym from situation normal: all fouled (or fucked ) up .

I came across the word on social media. It’s a useful way to sum things up just now.
